Apple Investigation: Fall Math & Science Apple Week Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten

One real apple, a handful of cubes and a tub of water are enough for a full week of early science. Children look closely, predict, measure, count, test and taste, then record what they find on a sheet that matches their level.

About this Apple Investigation Lab

The Apple Investigation Lab is a printable Apple Week resource that turns one apple into a full week of math, science and STEM exploration for preschool, Pre-K, TK and kindergarten. Instead of reading about apples, young learners handle a real one and record what they discover.

Children start by exploring with their five senses, then move into measuring. They measure an apple's height with cubes, compare apples by size and count the seeds inside. A sink or float test asks them to predict first and check after, and a taste test ends with a class graph of results.

Three differentiated recording sheets let the whole class run the same investigation while each child writes or marks answers at a comfortable level. A whole-class comparison chart pulls everyone's findings together, and eight vocabulary word cards introduce early science words as they come up.

Practice pages extend the week: a parts of an apple cut and paste, apple tree life cycle sequencing, counting and graphing pages, a taste test writing activity and an Apple Science Journal where children draw and write about what they learned. An Apple Scientist Award celebrates the finish.

A ready-to-use study plan and teacher guide map out the week, and an answer key is included. The 23 pages suit Apple Week, Johnny Appleseed units, fall STEM lessons, science centers, small groups, morning work and homeschool learning.

Ways to use Apple Investigation Lab

Why teachers like it

It turns a familiar fall food into real inquiry: children make a guess, test it and talk about what happened. Science and early math sit side by side, and the three recording levels let a mixed class work on the same investigation.

Questions

What materials do I need?

Real apples, linking cubes for measuring, and the printed pages. Some activities are cut and paste, so have scissors and glue ready.

Who is it for?

Preschool, Pre-K, TK and kindergarten classrooms, plus homeschool families.

How is it differentiated?

The investigation comes with three recording sheets at different levels, so younger and older children can take part in the same lesson.

Does it fit a Johnny Appleseed unit?

Yes. It works well for Apple Week, Johnny Appleseed units, fall STEM lessons, science centers and morning work.
