About this Fall Main Idea Reading Passages

Fall Main Idea Reading Passages is a reading comprehension set for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade that teaches students to find the topic, recognize supporting details and determine the main idea. Every passage is original nonfiction with a fall theme.

The set begins with ten scaffolded START passages. These short texts introduce the three key ideas one step at a time, so students understand what a topic is and how details hold up a main idea before they tackle longer reading.

Eight complete fall reading units follow, each paired with a graphic organizer. The longer passages include both stated and implied main ideas, and students practice summarizing and vocabulary along the way. Topics include apples, Johnny Appleseed, pumpkins, bats, spiders, fire safety, corn, popcorn, hibernation, monarch butterflies, harvest time and Thanksgiving.

Active reading is built into every page. Students box the topic, underline the main idea and circle supporting details, which makes their thinking easy to see during guided reading or quick checks. The same routine works on any nonfiction text students read later in the year. Four anchor charts and three reusable organizers support the routine.

A 10-week study plan runs from September through November, a teacher guide explains the mark-up strategies, and a 3-page answer key offers model responses. The 41 pages suit reading centers, guided reading, small groups, homework, intervention, homeschool and test preparation.
