About this Halloween Read-Aloud Activities

Halloween Read-Aloud Activities is a 1st and 2nd grade reading unit built around five original Halloween stories. Because every story is printed in the packet, teachers can print or project the text and start the lesson without hunting for mentor texts.

The stories mix genres on purpose. Students hear nonfiction about bats, stories about spiders, pumpkins and a ghost, and a retelling of a classic folk tale. The themes are friendly and age-appropriate, so the unit fits classrooms that keep Halloween light. Moving between fiction and nonfiction also gives children a natural reason to compare how different texts work.

Each read-aloud is followed by discussion questions, then by activities that practice a weekly comprehension skill: fact or opinion, fiction vs. nonfiction, sequencing, retelling, Venn diagrams and story maps. Vocabulary and grammar pages build word knowledge, and a Halloween grammar escape room turns review into a challenge.

Writing is part of every week too, with informative writing and opinion writing tasks that grow out of the stories. Together the pages build oral language, reading fluency, vocabulary and critical thinking.

A 5-week study plan and a teacher guide with weekly focus skills keep the month organized, and an answer key and Super Reader certificate are included. The 32 pages work for whole-group reading, guided reading, literacy centers, morning work, homeschool and sub plans.
